It’s a dingy kind of dive-ish bar on the not-so-great side of Slateport where Memo finds himself, late at night when most of the do-gooders have gone home. He should be headed there, too, but he’s bored, and it’s a nice night, with a scattering of freckle-like stars high in the night sky, and a brisk wind whipping along the alleys and rustling the trashcans of the beautiful, raggedy ass gem that was Slateport. [break][break]

The bar’s sign is failing neon, with the AOKE half broke and askew, occasionally spitting sparks down on the sidewalk. Memo can’t say for certain what makes him decide to venture in.[break][break]

The inside smells like cigarette smoke and cheap leather and sweat and the teenager behind the counter smells like weed and is drinking out of a dented-up Yeti that definitely has vodka in it. [break][break]

“There’s only one lounge open,” he says, voice nasally and pitched high with a late-stage youth. [break][break]

“”Sfine,” Memo says. [break][break]

The teen punches in a code and jerks his thumb towards a dark hallway. “Room 3.” [break][break]

The karaoke lounge is small, with four cheap folding chairs in front of a crappy, movable stage about a foot off the ground. The machine itself is covered in dust and old fingerprints and the room smells like air conditioning and vinyl. [break][break]

The microphone belches feedback and static when he taps it and the stage wobbles as he flips through the massive book of songs to try and find something to sing.[break][break]

He’s about halfway through when the door to the lounge opens and someone else walks in. Memo freezes, page half turned, like a Deerling in the headlights-- like he’s been caught imbibing in contraband, and this is his comeuppance. [break][break]

Well, people who worked his kind of job tended to frequent the not-so-nice sections of wherever they ended up, and this was where Adam was—for the moment.

After that ‘employment opportunity’ fell through, it had been nothing but odd jobs again, here and there.

(At least he had enough to keep his camera in safe storage, for a few months at least, because there was no way he was going to sell it off. Hell no. And unfortunately he had to hide his halberd there as well, thank the bloody hell it was collapsible otherwise…)

He wasn’t too sure what had made him pull open this door—asides from the fact that he was now working another quick part-time job, cleaning up this dingy, banged-up, dusty place for some money.

Merc work was bloody scarce out here.

“Oh, bloody—stupid kid out front didn’t tell me the room was occupied!” he remarked, his accent bleeding through as he was about to hightail it out of the room, suddenly embarrassed.

Music was a bit of a tough subject for Memo. He loved it-- loved making it, loved listening to it, loved being surrounded by it. But to indulge in it was to acknowledge the fact that he’d not come anywhere, really, in his music career. He’d worked on a few songs, sure, but nothing big. [break][break]

Anything to do with the sphere of music also aligned with the sphere of ‘home’ in his personal venn diagram. He was trying to avoid that island, if at all he could. [break][break]

So when Adam Lycaon opened the door to his private (kind of) karaoke suite, Memo felt the whole mountain fall in around him, complete with a Galarian twang. Still, he can’t stop the smile that leaks across his face, something mercurial and churlish and soaking in glee, with just the slightest hint of wickedness gleaming at the corner. [break][break]

“Fancy seeing you here,” he said, tone the tiniest bit fiendish, like he had bad ideas in his head. And he did-- oh yes, he did. He took the microphone from the stand and spun it in a leisurely circle, one elbow on the karaoke machine. “You’re just in time. I needed a duets partner.” He winks.

The moment he heard that familiar voice, though—

Talk about extreme embarrassment!

“Bollocks, it’s you!” he continued, all thought of yelling at the kid out at front abandoned (so were the cleaning supplies just outside) for the meantime as he leaned on the door frame.

“Fancy seeing you here again, y’know,” he went on, eventually closing the door (and wrinkling his nose at the smell of the room).

“Oh, not a darts opponent?” he cracked, unable to stop the chuckle that had bubbled up and just come out of him with absolutely no warning at all.

Well, if it was going to be for a few minutes, then… ehh, why not then?

“What’re you thinkin’ of singing?”

Adam seems, at the very least, not upset to see him. [break][break]

“Aye, in the flesh,” he says, flicking the power switch on the karaoke machine. There’s a flash of light and for a moment Memo is illuminated in the machine’s logo start-up page as it projects on the screen behind him. It plays a corny little jingle, too. [break][break]

“Not darts this time, no,” he said, watching Adam close the door behind him. He was staying, apparently. The two of them, alone in a dark room. “Something a little more… cooperative.” [break][break]

The karaoke machine is running through a sample track of popular songs. Memo flips a page in the directory with one finger. “What do you like to listen to?”
